The Wisdom of Hexagram — An Eastern Perspective

The Art of Following and Influence

In a world that often worships "Leadership," Hexagram 17 (Sui/Following) teaches us the forgotten power of following. Whether in business, friendship, or family, true connection is a dynamic balance of giving and receiving.

The structure of the hexagram reveals the secret: Thunder (Strength) lies beneath the Lake (Joy). This implies that the truly strong person knows how to lower themselves to listen and yield to others. This is the foundation of all healthy relationships.

To master the art of Following, the I Ching offers essential principles:

  1. Drop the Ego: We must abandon selfish motives and interact broadly with the world, rather than sticking to a small clique.

  2. Choose Wisely: We become what we follow. The text warns us to "follow the Superior Man" and let go of the "Inferior Man." Your company determines your destiny.

  3. Stay Pure: Following should be based on virtue, not on flattery or the desire for personal profit.

Summary: "Following" is not about blind obedience; it is about Timing—knowing when to move with the times and when to align with the good. When you follow the truth with sincerity and a joyful heart, you naturally attract others to follow you.
