Hexagram 19 (Lin/Approach) serves as a masterclass in the art of leadership. It answers a fundamental question: How should a leader approach their people and their responsibilities?
The I Ching reveals that true authority does not come from distance, but from connection. The journey begins with "Joint Approach" (Lines 1 & 2), where a leader moves the people not by force, but by the power of character and shared purpose. By aligning with the right allies and maintaining a balance of firmness and flexibility, a leader earns genuine support.
However, there is a dangerous trap. The text strictly warns against the "Sweet Approach" (Line 3)—using flattery, sweet words, or deception to manipulate the masses. This path may work briefly, but it leads to inevitable failure.
Instead, the true leader must practice the "Utmost Approach" (Line 4), going deep into the grassroots to understand the real struggles of the people. Higher still is the "Wise Approach" (Line 5). Here, the leader demonstrates the ultimate wisdom: knowing that they cannot do it all alone. They respect talent, delegate power to capable experts, and rule with an open mind.
